Abstract

The authority of fathers and mothers is often raised as a disputed field by different political actors. Considering recent sociocultural and legal transformations in family relationships, this article examines the problem of the meaning of parental authority. Through in-depth interviews with members of influential think tanks in the Chilean political debate, representing  different ideological positions, this article analyzes the distinct points of view on the concept of parental authority, ranging from its meaning and legitimacy, its recent changes and tensions, and the role that they attribute to the State in this sphere. The main results allow us to conclude about different ways in which political discourses signify the expectation of a more horizontal or democratic exercise of parenthood.
