Seeking to contribute to the field of studies that analyzes the relationship between social movements and the State, this article aims to bring the concept of narratives of defeat to the center of the analysis in order to understand how the electoral defeats of Black activists have produced effects on social movements. We used interviews and/or statements made by four activist candidates on party websites, major newspaper websites, blogs and social media who ran in at least one of the last four elections (2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020). The results show that the losses in the elections were frustrating for each of the activists and for the movements as a whole, but had significant effects on the articulation of new possibilities for struggles and on the promotion of demands for the reorganization of the strategies and tactics used.
