The rhetoric of intransigence and affirmative action: a discussion of Hirschman's theses applied to racial quotas in Brazilian public higher education

This study aims to discuss the dispute between conservative/reactionary and progressive ideas about racially-oriented affirmative action in Brazilian public universities based on a literature review and social media analysis. Taking the propositions of Hirschman (1992) on the
three theses of the Rhetoric of Reaction - jeopardy, futility and perversity - which subsidize the understanding of arguments commonly used against this affirmative policy, this article contrasts these rhetorics with the results of research conducted in Brazil involving racial quotas. It is argued that, against all the intransigent rhetoric previously conceived regarding racial
affirmative action in education, research plays a fundamental role in the evaluation of its effects and results. An understanding of the reactionary arguments is expected to lead to overcoming the barriers to dialogue and to contribute to the construction of a productive and genuine discussion on this issue in Brazil.
