Abstract

Death is a phenomenon that reveals important sociocultural aspects. The social sciences, especially anthropology, have already demonstrated the potential of this phenomenon beyond its biological aspects. In this article, death serves as a theme for reflection on experiences, narratives and senses. Based on reports of Near Death Experiences (NDEs), the author describes how sense narratives are constructed, how new emotional and cognitive arrangements are expressed narratively, and how much of the culture is shared by what is said. Thus, in this article, the central argument is to understand how a biological phenomenon, death,
can be redefined, gaining new contours and essentially cultural aspects. It is evident that near-death narratives are important relations with cosmological conceptions, involving aspects such as memory, symbolic perception and emotional patterns. In-depth interviews make up the theoretical material of the article.
