About the Journal

Focus and scope

Sociedade e Cultura is a publication of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Federal University of Goiás and its postgraduate programs in Social Anthropology, Political Science and Sociology. Original and unpublished manuscripts in the form of articles and book reviews in social science are accepted. The journal may exceptionally publish translations and interviews. The title required for publication as the first author of articles is doctorate, with the co-authorship of masters. For reviews, MS students may be authors. In addition to manuscripts in Portuguese, the Journal accepts contributions in English and Spanish.

The decision to publish is the responsibility of the editorial board, which is based on external blind peer review. The committee reserves the right to suggest authors to change the form or content in order to adapt the contributions to the journal's standard. The Journal does not charge fees for receiving or processing articles. Any modifications will be agreed with the authors. No additions or modifications will be accepted after the manuscripts are submitted for composition.

Spontaneous submission of any collaboration automatically implies the full assignment of copyright to Sociedade e Cultura. The journal does not return the originals of the submitted contributions. The statements and concepts issued in the signed manuscripts are the sole responsibility of their authors.

Peer Evaluation Process

Submissions undergo a formal initial evaluation by the editorial board. Texts that do not fit the journal's focus and scope or that do not comply with editorial and presentation standards will be archived. For submissions that go through the initial evaluation, two evaluations are indicated by specialists, which will be used as a subsidy to the editors. A third reviewer may be consulted in case of conflicting evaluations. The publication of papers is subject to compliance with recommendations of the reviewers. The evaluation takes into account the originality and relevance, consistency and rigor of the approach, as well as its contribution to the Social Sciences and the journal's thematic line. The review system is double blind: the names of the reviewers will remain confidential, and the names of the authors before the reviewers will also be omitted.

Periodicity

Sociedade e Cultura was published twice a year until December 2019. From 2020 onwards it has been adopting a continuous flow in the publication of articles in the areas of Anthropology, Political Science, International Relations and Sociology. In addition, it may publish reviews, translations and interviews, if previously approved by the editorial board.

Open Access Policy

The journal offers immediate free access to its content, following the principle that making it available to the public contributes to the democratization of knowledge.

Ethical Commitment

The journal follows the ethical publication standards of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), whose principles are described here. Practices of plagiarism, self-plagiarism, falsification and data fabrication are not allowed. These scientific misconducts are defined by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences as follows, respectively, on this website:

  1. Plagiarism involving the appropriation of ideas and the work of others without due credit;
  2. Self-plagiarism or republication of scientific results already disclosed, as if they were new, without informing previous publication;
  3. Forgery or manipulation of data, procedures and results;
  4. Manufacture of results and records as if they were real;

The editorial board commits itself to impersonality, transparency and confidentiality in evaluations, preserving the right of reviewers, authors and institutions involved in the editorial process. Crossref Similarity Check program is used in the evaluation process. The journal is also signatory of the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

Erratum and Disclaimer Policy

The COPE (here) and Council of Science Editors (here) guidelines are followed for the correction of articles. Based on these sources, there are three methods for correcting scientific literature:

  1. Erratum - Refers to amendments or changes to parts of the article. Corrections may be in article title, author names, typographical or diagrammatic errors;
  2. Retraction - Refers to partial corrections of the article due to methodological errors, incorrect data analysis, scientific misconduct or non-reproducible research. There is also the possibility of removing the entire article from the journal page;
  3. Concern Expression - Refers to an editor posting a notice when there is concern about the reliability of an article, but the information is insufficient to warrant retraction.

The request and the writing of the correction must be made by the author responsible for the article. If there is disagreement among the authors about what is being corrected, the periodical editor becomes responsible for writing the correction. An erratum, retraction or concern expression will be published as soon as possible, and the article remains on the journal page with specific indication of correction.

Allegations of Misconduct

Allegations of misconduct by authors, reviewers and editors are analyzed by the editorial board, which has a 30-day deadline to respond to the allegation. Included in this field are suspicions of plagiarism, fabrication and falsification of data, divergence between published texts and journal standards, improper self-citation, citation exchange, and improper practices that may impact editorial metrics. If the misconduct is identified, the article object of the complaint will be excluded from the journal, followed by the respective justifications.
