Abstract

The discovery of gold in the Goiano territory during the eighteenth century of the Brazilian colonial period established a region historically called as mining which covered Vila Boa de Goiás, Meia Ponte, Crixás, São José do Tocantins, Guarinos e Pilar de Goiás. From the 2000’s, northern Goiás started to concentrate three quarters of the mineral production in terms of export and tax revenues. This production is characterized by the plurality of ores and the diversity of places in which they are found. This suggests the setting of a new mining region in Goiás, whose purpose is based on classic and contemporary conceptions of the region’s concept. Its boundaries are made up of fifteen municipalities, where mining plays an important role for internal and external links, with other regions of the State, the country and the world, for which the northern Goiás exports asbestos, copper, nickel and gold.
