Fires cause various negative externalities to the environment, such as the loss of natural biomass vegetation, increased emission of fine particulate material into the atmosphere, raising of the surface temperature and the aggravation of respiratory diseases. The objective of this paper is to analyze the effect of the incidence of
burned areas on hospital admissions and costs of treatment of respiratory diseases registered by the Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) for the state of Goiás in 2010. The morbidities bronchitis and emphysema and asthma were four times more hospitalizations than the upper respiratory tract, and for these, the average hospitalization and treatment costs were higher in the dry season (season of burning). The regions north, south and east were most affected by the effects of fires, respectively. However, the center region of Goiás had the lowest records of
burned in 2010 and the biggest records of hospital admissions and the costs of treatment compared with other regions of Goiás. Among respiratory diseases, asthma is the one that showed the highest correlation with the records of burned areas for the period analyzed.
Key words: burning, respiratory diseases, admissions, Goiás.
