About the Journal

Scope and focus

            Boletim Goiano de Geografia is an academic journal of the Goiás Federal University’s Socioenvironmental Institute (IESA/UFG) that adopts continuous-flow publishing model. Its goal is to disseminate knowledge about geography and related areas through scientific articles and theoretical essays resulting from research of recognized technical and academic merit.

 

Peer Review Policy

To submit na article, click on <https://www.revistas.ufg.br/bgg/user/register>. An email notifying the submission of the manuscript will be sent to the correspondent author.

Original articles in conformity with the Guidelines for Authors are evaluted in double-blind system by two members of the Scientific Council and/or  ad hoc referees within 60 days. If it needs some corrections, the author has 15 days to send the corrected version. Rejected articles are given back to the authors with their due justifications. In case of disagreement, the author may request, via e-mail, a new opinion to the Editorial Board.

Reviewers cannot have conflicts of interest to declare. The following examples are conflicts of interest: XXXXXXXXX

The Peer Review Sheet should be used to evaluating and correcting the manuscripts.

The Editorial Board will send the author the opinion and, if necessary, the article with the comments made by the reviewers. In case of an review favorable and another opinion against, the text will be sent to a third reviewer. If there are predominant unfavorable reviews, the article will be returned to the author. Under favorable reviews, the author will be informed of the editorial decision. The final decision on acceptance or rejection is based solely in the peer review.

Periodicity

The Boletim Goiano de Geografia was published twice a year until December 2012. Between 2013 and 2018, became a quarterly periodical and, in 2019 adopted continuous-flow model. The goal, in the continuous-flow model, is to publish between 30 and 40 articles a year. The Boletim Goiano de Geografia does not publish dossiers, reviews and, papers presented at academic events.

 

Open Access Policy

This academic journal offers open access to its content, following the principle that makes available free scientific knowledge to the public provides greater global democratization of knowledge.

 

Mission

Disseminate knowledge about geography through the publication of scientific articles and theoretical essays of researchers from scientific institutions of recognized technical and academic merit, with the purpose of contributing to the debate on social development.

 

Ethical Commitment 

The Boletim Goiano de Geografia commits itself to ethical behavior in all stages of the editorial process. Practices of plagiarism, self-plagiarism, fabrication and falsification of data will not be allowed. These research misconduct are defined by the Brazilian Academy of Sciences as follows:

 

  1. Fabrication of results and records as it was real;
  2. Falsification or manipulating data, procedures and results;
  3. Plagiarism involving the appropriation of ideas and the work of others without the credit due;
  1. Self-plagiarism or republication of scientific results already published, as if it was new, without informing preview publication. (2013, p. 11)

 

The Editorial Board commits itself to impersonality, transparency and confidentiality in evaluations, preserving the right of evaluators, authors and institutions involved in the editorial process. We use Plagius software – Plagiarism Detector –  in the editing process.

We are committed to the ethical principles of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).  We are also signatories to the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

 

Correction and retraction policy

Boletim Goiano de Geografia follows the guidelines of the COPE <https://publicationethics.org/resources/guidelines-new/guidelines-retracting-articles> and of the Council of Science Editors < https://publicationethics.org/files/retraction%20guidelines.pdf > to correcting articles. Based on the information gathered from the sources mentioned, three methods may be used to correcting the scientific literature:

  • Errata – refers to amendments or alterations in parts of the article. The corrections can be in the title of the article, names of the authors, typographic or diagrammatic errors.
  • Retraction – refers to partial corrections in the article, such as methodological errors, data analysis, research misconduct, irreproducible research or even the withdrawal of the article in its entirety from the academic journal's website.
  • Expressions of concern – refers to the publication of a notice by the editor when there is concern about the reliability of an article, but the information are insufficient to record a retraction.

The request and correction must be made by the author responsible for the article.  If there is disagreement between the authors about what is being corrected, the editor of the academic journal becomes responsible for writing the correction. The errata, retraction or expression of concern will be published as soon as possible, and the article will remain on the website of the journal and with the respective indication of correction.

 

Allegations of misconduct

Allegations of misconduct of authors, reviewers, and editors will be forwarded to the Editorial Board, which will have a period of 30 days to respond to the author of the allegation. This includes plagiarism suspected, fabrication and falsification of data, divergence between published contributions and rules of publication of the academic journal, improper self-citation, change of citations, and indications of undue citations by reviewers that may impact editorial metrics. The second instance of resources will be the responsibility of the Director of the Institute of Socio-Environmental Studies (IESA), under the responsibility of conducting the Board of Director (https://www.iesa.ufg.br/feedback). If the misconduct is identified, even after publication, the article will be excluded from the Boletim Goiano de Geografia, followed by the respective justifications.

 

Indexation

According to the evaluation by Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Level Personnel (CAPES), the academic journal is classified as QUALIS A-1 in the area of Geography, and as A2 in the areas of Regional and Interdisciplinary Planning. Boletim Goiano de Geografia is indexed in the following databases: Emerging Sources Citation Index, Redalyc, Latindex, Dialnet, DOAJ, Geodados, Electronic Journals Library, LIVRE, Periódica, Science-Gate, Portal de Periódicos CAPES, PKP Index, Genamics, Biblat, Ebscohost.

 

Language

Manuscripts must be written in Portuguese or Spanish. We also provide articles in bilingual format, as long as translation costs are the responsibility of the authors. It will be the responsibility of the Editorial Board to indicate the set of articles for possible translation, not being the obligatory adhesion on the part of the authors.

 

Responsibility for the published contents

The published content is the sole and exclusive responsibility of its authors, although it is reserved to the editors the right to make linguistic corrections and adaptation of the article to the rules of publication of the academic journal.

 

Co-authorship

Articles submitted, except in exceptional cases, must be authored by a maximum of three authors. Co-authorship involves participation in all phases of production (data collection and interpretation, literary analysis, writing and critical review, etc.). It is recommended that the first author be the one with the greatest effective participation in the different phases of the work. At the time of submission, the Individual Contribution Declaration is requested in case of articles with two or three authors.

 

Endogeny

Each year will be allowed the publication of a maximum of 10% of articles by authors related to IESA/UFG. The editorial process of the endogenous articles will follow the same patterns of the flow of external authors. The publication of articles by the same author in the same year will not be allowed. We also remind that the inclusion of authors after the beginning of the evaluation process of the manuscript will not be allowed under any circumstances.

Charge and fees

The Boletim Goiano de Geografia does not charge fees or any financial charges for the publication of the contents made available on our platform.

 

Translation of texts

The translation of the texts selected for publication is realized exclusively by professionals recomended by the Editorial Board, making exceptions for translators with proven experience.

 

Individual Contribution Declaration Model

This declaration must be forwarded in the form of a supplementary document in doc, docx or pdf formats.

MODEL: All the authors offered substantial scientific and intellectual contributions to the study. The tasks of conception and research study, preparation and writing of the manuscript as well as critical review were developed in a group. The first author _____ was particularly responsible for the theoretical-conceptual development. The second author _____, for the acquisition of data and its interpretations and analysis; and the third _____, for the technical procedures and translation of the manuscript.

 

Conditions of submission

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • The contribution is original and unpublished and is not being evaluated for publication by any other journal. Articles and expanded abstracts published fully or partially in scientific events will also not be accepted.  To check that the article has not been published, the Editorial Board will use a specific software to identify text similarity. The text must contain the title of the manuscript,and the abstracts and keywords written in three languages (Portuguese, English, Spanish/French);
  • The files for submission are in Microsoft Word (the file size should not exceed 4MB);
  • All addressesof Web pages (URLs) contained in the text (eg. http://www.ibict.br) are active and ready to click;
  • Text is double-spaced, in Times New Roman, size 12, use italic instead of underlining, and with the figures and tables  inserted in the body text. Figures may be made in software depending on the authors' preference (Excel, Sigma Plot, etc.) They must be inserted and sent in TIFF or JPG format with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
  •  The text follows the format requirements of the academic journal described in the Guidelines for Authors, in the section “About the Journal”; 
  • The exclusive copyright of the article will be assigned to Boletim Goiano de Geografia.

 

 Authors Guidelines

  • The manuscript should be saved in a .doc format (Microsoft Word). Metadata must be entered   with the title of the article, name and the address of the authors, last academic degree and institutional affiliations, telephone, fax and e-mail.
  • Authors should also include in the article the ORCID iD. The article should be a minimum of 10 pages and a maximum of 20 pages.
  • The article can have a maximum of three authors.
  • No more than one author contribution per year will be accepted.
  • Articles can be written in Portuguese or Spanish,and should contain an abstract of 250 words maximum, with titles and keywords (three to four) in Portuguese, Spanish or French.
  • At the time of submission, the translation declarations of the abstracts must be sent.
  • After the title of the article, author's names and institutional affiliations, city, state and country must be inserted and written in full, without abbreviations, including e-mails.
  • We suggest that the manuscripts should be revised by a specialized professional before the first submission.
  • The Individual Contribution Declaration must be forwarded in the form of a supplementary document in doc, docx or pdf formats to articles with two or three authors. The model can be found on the tab “About”, on the home page.
  • Text is double-spaced, in Times New Roman, size 12, with top and bottom margins of 2 and 2.5 cm, left and right of 3 and 2.5 cm, respectively. Articles must contain an introduction and final consideration. The figures (graphs, drawings, diagrams, maps, photographs) with their respective legends should be sent preferably colored, in order to allow a perfect readability.
  • Figures files should be sent in COREL, JPEG, PNG, BMP or TIFF format in the body of the text and in a separate file with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi's.
  • Researches financed by funding agencies should insert note at the end of the article informing the type of funding (master's or doctoral funding, federal, state, municipal or even international agencies, private companies etc.) and the effective date of funding.
  • References must be presented according to NBR 6023 (ABNT, 2002).

 

Guidelines for abstracts

Abstracts must be written in accordance with ABNT NBR 6028/2003 and translated into English, Spanish or French. For abstracts in English and French or Spanish, the translation declarations of the abstracts issued by translators with proven experience must be sent.

The abstracts maximum is 250 words in total, stating the purpose of the study,  methodological approach; findings and conclusions. The use of the verb must be in the active voice and in the third person singular.

 

 Copyright Declaration

The authors will not be remunerated for the publication of scientific articles and theoretical essays in the Boletim Goiano de Geografia, as they must give up their copyrights in favor of this  academic journal. The published content, however, is the sole and exclusive responsibility of its authors, although it is reserved to the publishers the right to make linguistic corrections in the texts and adaptations to the norms of the publication.

The names and addresses informed in this academic journal will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication and will not be made available for other purposes or to third parties.
