Abstract

This paper discusses the theoretical and conceptual references from “social representations” categories. It also analyses the social representations produced and /or transmitted by the press and touristic publicity in Goiânia, Goiás, Brazil. These representations, based on landscape characteristics of urban space as a background, normally support the construction of various images about this city and assign its identities. However, these images probably configure a condition cited in Penna (1992) as self-attribution of identity. They are classifications originated in the exteriority of the group, recognized by determined social agents. Therefore, the representations for this city is determined by its inhabitants.
