Abstract

In the historic center of Lima City, a series of urban planning policies were applied with the objective of restoring and revitalizing this place during the municipal governments of Alberto Andrade Carmona (1996 - 2002) and Luis Castañeda Lossio (2003 - 2010). A process of gentrification and touristification takes place, resulting especially in the loss or intentional modification of the social and cultural structure. To analyze this process, we focused on the public policies implemented with the objectives of eradicating street trading in the area, as well as the case study of actions on public space. The initiatives carried out resulted in the economic revitalization of the center, tourist exploitation of the heritage and reappropriation of the main streets and squares by the Lima society.
