Abstract

Human communities develop an intimate relationship with their living space and, hence with the surrounding landscapes, whether natural or built. This space and these landscapes are used by residents, but also by visitors who live elsewhere. This phenomenon has taken such proportions during the 20th Century that it came to be designated as the “tourism space”. Depending on their needs and perceptions, visitors (also called tourists) and visited (also called residents) nurture a different, sometime antagonistic or even conflicting rapport with the tourism space. In any case, what is the maximum tolerance limit that cannot be exceeded by tourism areas? For visitors and visited alike, the authenticity of landscapes and their essential meaning have become a major issue in land-use planning and management. Key-words: tourism space, visitors, land-use planning, management.
