Abstract

This study evaluates the territorial aspects of the sugar-energy sector (i.e., producer of both sugarcane and derivatives) in small urban centers in the region named Triângulo Mineiro (west of the State of Minas Gerais). These urban centers correspond to the seats of municipalities which have experienced a significant expansion of planting and industrial production at the beginning of this century. These centers, referred to as “sugarcane towns” in this study, have become economically dependent on the sugar-energy sector. The lack of job alternatives has established a restricted routine for the local population, despite the public authorities’ interest in having this sector as a driving force for development.
