In the cities, parties happen as popular parties or traditional parties. In Brazil’s cities the patron saint’s parties occur since the colonial period and they mark the national’s calendar. The patron saint’s parties represent an homage of each cities patron saint, but also they represent the cities foundation day, therefore it unites the religious aspect and de profane one, and yet, in many cases, the civil aspect of parties. In 19 th and the first decades of 20 th century those parties were events with great importance in the cities inhabitant’s life. This paper try to rescue the civil and saint parties as well its meaning to the life of this city from the documental registrations, and mainly from the Joao Pessoa’s inhabitants memories.
