Abstract

Social inequality is an integral part of the broad spectrum ofdisparities in everyday Brazil. Based on the premise that a largeshare of wealth is concentrated socially, the following article seeksto understand the urban-scale geographic formation of the spatialconcentration of wealth in the city of Brasilia. By means of socialand political analysis, and of the geographic approach, it examinespossible causes and consequences; in which a minority of large scaleentrepreneurs and local bureaucrats, backed by court decisions, formstratified spaces. These groups explore the local real estate marketin order to select areas of greater amenity, the zoning of which willperpetuate the current, inequitable situation. Brasilia, which wasplanned to grow into a democratic, model-city, finally became a mirrorimage of Brazilian social reality.
