Abstract

This paper discusses the meanings attributed to the concepts of race, ethnicity and negritude in the scientific literature and cultural systems of common sense. The arguments in support of the debate rests on three main objectives, namely: identify the processes that shaped the race as a theoretical concept and as a category of difference that sets up social reality; analyze the possibilities and limitations of the concept of ethnicity; discuss the cultural politics involved in the development of the concept of negritude. Finally, the paper discusses the uses of the concepts of race, ethnicity and negritude to ethnogeographical debates and the construction of anti-essentialist geographies.
