Mapping the nets: youngsters, digital and residence territories

Abstract

The text presents reflections on young people's experience in Aglomerado da Serra, an urban periphery area, in the city of Belo Horizonte/Minas Gerais. Those reflections are the result of an ethnography developed among young people in the territory they live and in cyberspace as well. The research in digital social media revealed that urban places such as cities, neighborhoods and the streets are not only digitized, but also mark online socialization of the youth. Their posts on social media show interfaces between the city and the web and cyberspace was revealed to be a fold of urban life. The place where they live has not only the function of spatial reference or space of residence anymore, but also of a social and symbolic category, an essential component of the plot of their identity references and of their processes of socialization and individualization.
