This article concerns the monstrous “montações” (brazilian term that concerns make up, costume, performance) practiced by drag queens, burlesque dancers and voguing dancers in Rio de Janeiro, RJ, São Paulo, SP and Salvador, BA, during the years of 2017 and 2018 and that were photographed for the project “m0n5+r_S”, by the same author of the article. The image series was created at performance contests, balls, cabarets, where this kind of performative practice happens; and edited to bring attention to the monstrous, weird and grotesque aspects of them. At this text, the practice of “montação” will be described, and it’s ethics, aesthetics and political aspects will be discussed, referencing Paul Preciado, Judith Butler, Jaqueline de Jesus, Nízia Villaça and Hija de Perra. Also the notions of monstrosity and grotesque at this form of contemporary art will be discussed, as well as its place in relation to the queer theory and LGBTQIA+ community.
