There are currently historiographical issues in Dance Studies as a discipline, such as archiving andreenactment (reenactment or reperformance) that, although they have been extensively worked on from the Global North, have yet to be deepened from a localized point of view. It is necessary to investigate possible articulations between the practice of dance and historiographical work from different facets, namely: archives as choreographies, archives of dance artists, reconstructions or recreations of dance works, and critical pedagogies for teaching dance history. From these axes, we are developing a project entitled “Historiographies in movement. Archive, recreation and new methodologies to address the history of Argentine dance” (PICTO-UNA) in which we intend to discuss the canonical narratives that build memories of dance making and establish a totalizing genealogical map.
The aim of this dossier is to critically analyze and discuss the links between dance, body, history and memory. To investigate, test and design new methodologies for the history of local dance in dialogue with theories already installed on the subject, which come mainly from the Dance Studies of the Global North, and include interdisciplinary approaches in dialogue with cultural studies, art history, cultural history and performance studies, etc.. We consider that making history and making dance or choreography would not be as opposed as they are usually understood, for this reason we problematize the notions of archive, reconstruction and heritage. Dance as a mode of representation will allow us to intervene and disrupt its own canon, and to test formulations from other disciplines in terms of the specific historical practices of dance. Is making dance history “making history” in the sense in which it is usually understood? Or is it necessary to interrogate the epistemological bases that shape such history?
This dossier aims to call for papers that critically analyze the links between dance, body, history and memory, from dance studies, performance studies, and research in artistic practice. We are interested in reflecting on archiving, recreation and new methodologies to address the history of dance, especially in the Global South, Latin America and Ibero-America. From this central axis, we suggest a series of thematic guidelines that will serve to organize the proposal:
- The history, its documents and monuments in the dances
- Archiving, de-archiving and anti-archiving of dances
- Archives of dance artists
- Dance, institutions and heritage
- Memory and representation in dance works
- Performance and body memories and their role in dance history and pedagogy
- Recreations and reconstructions of dance works
- Dance works in dialogue with history
- Practice as research and critical pedagogies for the teaching of dance history.
Original papers will be received in Spanish, Portuguese and English, which must follow the guidelines for authors of the journal.
Deadline for submissions: April 30, 2025
