Abstract

Leprosy is a chronic disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, an obligatory
intracellular bacillus that infects preferentially skin macrophages and Schwann
cells of peripheral nerves. The diagnosis of the disease is complex as there are
several clinical manifestations. New diagnostic tests aiming the control of disease transmission are being pursued, among which we highlight the dosage of IgM
anti phenolic glycolipid-1 (PGL-1). Total serum antibodies against PGL-1 in
patients and in their household contacts were evaluated by enzyme immunoassay.
Both patients and their contacts presented detectable levels of anti-PGL-1 in the
serum thus indicating a potential risk of transmission of the disease among these
individuals.
