In this study, conducted between February and September 2007, soil samples of sixdifferent locations – two public squares, two recreation clubs and two schools – situated
in the municipality of Caratinga in Minas Gerais State, Brazil were examined. A total of 18 samples of soil was examined monthly. The diagnostic techniques applied
were spontaneous sedimentation and the Faust method. In 89.6% of the collected
samples eggs of Toxocara sp. and/or cysts of Entamoeba sp. were observed. Lectures
about helminths were held in the two schools, and, at this occasion, the results of this
study were presented to the pupils. The data show a high rate of soil contamination,
indicating an increased risk of infection with parasites for the population.
