The intestinal protozoan parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia have deservedmuch attention by the researchers, due to its association with acute and chronic
diarrheic diseases, both in immunocompromised and immunocompetent
individuals. The occurrence of waterborne and foodborne outbreaks enhance
their importance to Public Health. In May 2007, the II International Giardia and
Cryptosporidium Conference was held to discuss the current state of knowledge and
to identify effective control strategies, to discuss and transmit pertinent information
and technologies, and to encourage young scientists. The purpose of this paper
is to spread this information among the Brazilian scientific community. During
the event, numerous aspects of the biology of these parasites were discussed, as
well as advances in new detection and molecular characterization methodologies,
fundamental to the knowledge of the epidemiology of each species, and proteomics
studies that could point out new methods to control Giardia and Cryptosporidium.
