Strongyloides stercoralis is mainly an intestinal parasite. The complicated formsmay evolve to a disseminated form, especially if the patient is in prolonged therapy
with corticoids, other immunosuppressant drugs, or radiotherapy. Here we describe
the case of a female, 16 years old, from Amazonas State, Brazil, diagnosed with
autoimmune hemolytic anemia since August/2005. None of her stool examinations
were positive for Strongyloides stercoralis, being detected only in sputum. She started
treatment with thiabendazole, however her clinical state worsen and she died. We recommend the importance of complementary exams, such as stool examination,
before starting any chemotherapeutic treatment for hemolytic anemia.
