Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the contamination of public squares of
three cities located in the State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, by eggs and larvae of
helminths, and to observe the presence of feces from animals and the environmental
conditions that contribute to infectious structures development. Samples from
60 public squares were analyzed by centrifuge-flotation and spontaneous
sedimentation techniques. Sixteen (26.7%) samples were positive for the presence
of hookworms-like eggs, and 2 (3.3%) for Toxocara sp; in both cases fecal and soil
samples were analyzed. The number of positive fecal samples was 17 (34.7%), and only 2 (3.3%) public squares presented eggs from these parasites in soil samples.
Nematode larvae were observed in 34 (56.7%) public squares, including all those
positive for parasites eggs, except one. The results obtained demonstrate the
potential viability for the transmission of zoonotic diseases, caused by cat and dog
helminthes, to the community that frequents those places.
