Abstract

Lymphatic filariasis is a parasitic disease endemic in 73 countries and affects about 120

million people worldwide. The purpose of this study was to establish a profile for lymphedema  patients residing in endemic areas for Filariasis, with or without confirmed diagnosis of previous disease. It is a transversal study involving patients with lymphedema registered in SRNF-CPqAM-FIOCRUZ-PE, living in major cities in Metropolitan regions of the State ofPernambuco. Patient socio-demographic and epidemiological profiles were recorded and evaluated. 35 patients were selected for the study, 80% women aged mostly 40-59 years of age (48.6%). Of the patients studied, 40% presented bilateral lower limb lymphedema with moderate pain in the affected limb. Only 20% of the total number of treated individuals were diagnosed positively for Filariasis. 68% reported living in paved street neighborhoods with regular garbage collection and access to clean water. The results of this study contribute to a better knowledge of lymphedema profile patients seen at the reference health service and may,

therefore, help improve public health policies
