Abstract

Lymphatic filariasis is a parasitic disease that affects tropical and subtropical regions. InBrazil, only the metropolitan area ofRecife(Recife,Olinda, Jaboatão dos Guararapes and Paulista) has been considered an active transmission focus of the parasite. The purpose of this study was to describe the history of the control activities of this parasitic disease, showing the main actions developed since1987 inOlinda-PE, an area that has long presented a significant number of cases. Over the last 30 years, many clinical, laboratorial and epidemiological studies have been developed in this city. Recently, more than five mass treatment cycles with diethylcarbamazine citrate were performed in the area, with the support of over 65% of the population, which contributed to a reduction of the local microfilaremia to rates under 1%. This fact enabled transmission assessment surveys, a decisive step to define the current situation of LF and new control and surveillance strategies
