The purpose of this study was the investigation of serological results for Chagas disease (CHD) of blood donors from a blood bank in the city of Santiago, Rio Grande do Sul, from June 2001 to May 2011. Data were obtained from the HEMOVIDA® system, through 10,164 blood donations. 2.7% (272) of the donations proved reactive for T. cruzi, the first cause of disposal of blood bags serologically tested for infectious diseases. Among the reagent results, 6.3% (17) were also positive for other serological markers: Hepatitis B (9 cases), hepatitis C (4 cases), HTLV I/II (3 cases), and Syphilis (1 case). Although confirmatory serological tests and the characterization of the clinical form of the disease are relevant steps performed in reference centers, the results indicate a high seroreactivity index in T. cruzi screenings in this study area.
The transmission of T. cruzi through blood transfusion is a possibility in the northwest of RS therefore requiring special attention in the mandatory serological test for CHD in Blood Banks.
