We finish 2011 celebrating 40 years of circulation of the journal Revista de Patologia Tropical. Some changes were necessary in this last year in order to follow new times. After suggestions received from the main international indexation services, the graphic project suffered some modifications, as for example highlighting the abstracts in both languages, now both are in the first page. The website has been also reformulated in order to be friendlier. There was an increase on the proportion of papers in English, the language which will be prioritized in the future in order to make this journal more accessible for the international scientific community. The time elapsed between submission and publication has been shortened. In addition, an editor for plagiarism has been included to avoid the publication of non cited references.
We are indebted to authors who responded to a call for papers campaign, considerably increasing the number of submitted manuscripts. As a consequence, the number of articles has increased in the last issues.
As an immediate consequence of some of the modifications performed, we were satisfied to verify that in a few months there was an exponential increase on the site visits, from 500 to 3,000 per week.
We would like to express our gratitude to the board of referees assigned with the difficult task of peer review. In this context, new names were added in order to attend to the increased demand. As no school for referees is available, some junior scientists have been learning by reading the comments of senior investigators, when the second version of each paper is received.
After 16 years as editor of this journal, the former editor A.O. Luquetti has been appointed as co-editor due to his retirement, and Prof. Ruy de Souza Lino Júnior, former co-editor, has assumed as the new editor.
We hope that all these changes will contribute to an increase in visibility of this journal, and, as a consequence, an increase in one of the indexes, the impact factor. We hope to be included in the near future in more international indexing databases. Finally, we hope to have the support and satisfaction of our user, the reader.
