Invasive fungal infections are an increasing threat to human health. There has been a considerable increase in the rate of nosocomial bloodstream infections caused by Candida species. C. albicans is the main isolated yeast from candidemias, however the isolation of C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis has been recently reported. The objectives of this study were to isolate, identify and evaluate the susceptibility profile of C. tropicalis to systemic antifungals. Fifty samples of C. tropicalis were isolated from blood, urine and bronchoalveolar fluid from patients from Ceará State, Brazil. The sensitivity of the strains to amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole and voriconazole by microdilution in RPMI broth were determined. Strains of C. tropicalis showed no resistance, but we found strains with high MIC for fluconazole, which indicates the need for monitoring Candida spp. isolated in Ceará State for evaluation of resistance.
