Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the causes that often leads men and women to seek treatment at health units. This study aimed to evaluate the profile of antimicrobial resistance of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from urine cultures collected in a private laboratory in São Luis, MA, from 2005 to 2008. A retrospective and descriptive study was conducted with information collected from study forms with the results from 1,000 urine cultures performed during the study period. Seven hundred and forty eight cultures were positive for Enterobacteriaceae species, where Escherichia coli and Klebsiella spp were predominant, with 73.4% and 26.6% frequency, respectively. Most positive cases were from females (68.9%) and the age group of 20 to 29 years was the most affected (54.5%) for both pathogens. As to sensitivity / resistance to antimicrobials, E.coli and Klebsiella spp showed high resistance index (75.6%) to amoxicillin / clavulanic acid, and nalidixic acid (82.5%), suggesting that their use should be avoided in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
