In order to describe parasitic contamination of playground sand boxes, a total of 40 samples of sand samples were collected in playgrounds of six day care centers in the municipality of Várzea Paulista, Sao Paulo state, Brazil, from November 12th to 18th of 2009. The samples were processed by the technique of centrifugal flotation in solutions of sodium dichromate and sucrose. In all centers, eggs of Ascaris lumbricoides and Toxocara spp. were found, eggs and larvae of Ancylostoma spp. were observed in 50% of the sites studied and Trichuris spp. was noted in one (16.7%) of them. The contamination by helminths in the playground sandboxes of these day care centers, that attend children up to four years of age, was high, indicating the need to adopt measures to reduce the risk of exposure to these parasites that may compromise the health of these children.
