Abstract

The fauna composition and frequency of sandflies in six rural localities of
Prudentópolis municipality, State of Paraná, Brazil are reported here. The sandflies
were captured between 6:00 pm and 1:00 am, with Falcão traps in several months
of 2008 and 2009. A total of 1,429 sandflies were captured, representing seven
species. Nyssomyia neivai (73.3%) predominated at all localities. The highest hourly
averages of sandflies occurred in dwellings (10.71), chicken houses (10.25), riparian
forests (6.46) and pigpens (5.80). The environmental characteristics of the localities
where the sandflies were captured showed that conditions were appropriate for the
transmission of American cutaneous leishmaniasis. The knowledge of the fauna,
the frequency of sandflies and the form of occupation of the environment, may help in the choice of the most appropriate methods to reduce the density of sandflies in
peridomicile and domicile.
