Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution, reported in humans, pigs, cattle, horses, goats, dogs, rodents, and several species of wild animals. The swine
leptospirosis is a disease of obligatory notification classified in the List B by the Office
International des Epizooties (OIE), as a disease common to many species. According
to the standards for certification of breeding swine farms, the whole farm must be
certified free of classical swine fever, Aujeszky’s disease, brucellosis, tuberculosis,
scabies, and free or controlled for leptospirosis. Thus, this review aimed to describe
aspects of Leptospirosis in swine in Brazil, especially in Piauí and Maranhão State,
where the registry of animal and human leptospirosis cases are scarce or inexistent.
