The article investigates how cis-heteronormativity, hegemonic masculinity and structural homophobia shape the construction of identities of cisgender gay men in the contemporary Brazilian context. The work discusses the mechanisms of normalization that impose rigid standards of masculinity and sexuality, devaluing dissident expressions such as effeminacy. The empirical research was conducted with 200 cisgender gay men. Using thematic content analysis, the data reveal that hegemonic masculinity functions as an unattainable ideal model, producing tensions between belonging and rejection, and generating psychological suffering, internalized homophobia and mechanisms of silencing. However, the recognition of these symbolic and structural violences can also boost processes of self-affirmation, resistance and the construction of care and support networks.
Keywords: homophobia; homosexuality; violence; man; masculinity.
