Relational places experienced in prison research: engendering bodies, spaces and images

Based on ethnographic research with transvestites in the prison system, the theoretical and methodological implications of the dual identity as researcher and prison guard experienced in the field are discussed. An ongoing dialogue with various collaborators throughout the research allowed for a refinement of spatial notions experienced in and from the prison space, allowing for an understanding of the
dynamics of the research subjects beyond confinement and the identities they displayed in the field. Reflections on the mutual constitution of gender, sexuality, and the state are brought together with the realms of anthropology and image, suggesting possible methodological advances for studies of prison spaces.
