Tom, the Naturalist

Authors

Abstract

In this essay, Michael Taussig, based on the figure of Tom, The Naturalist, a radio presenter from his childhood, reflects on the relationships between humans and animals. He proposes the concept of “metamorphic sublime”, which tries to account for contemporary realities marked by logics of disenchantment and re-enchantment of the world. The analysis presented is based both on Taussig child's reminiscences as well as on his memories as a first-year medical student and on his fieldwork experience in the Putumayo region. Faced with a collapsing world, Taussig leads us to reflections, based  on Walter Benjamin, which concern both the lack of adequate language in the face of “dark surreality” and the possible futures for humans and non-humans.
