Emporium & Warisan: rewriting colonial heritage

This text discusses the ongoing patrimonialization process in the city of Malacca (West Malaysia).
Anchored in ethnographic research, this article explores alternative notions (and valuations)
of heritage by various categories of people in the city, demonstrating that the production of
discourses about space is fraught with diverse (and sometimes conflicting) meanings of what is
valued as heritage (warisan, in local language).
