Self-Displacing Voyages and their Unsettlement of Routines of Aesthetic Mobility

The repetitive rhythms, directionalities, and creative impulses displayed by our traveling behaviors are subject of remarkable contemporary artworks. These works reach into an extended philosophical lineage intertwining aesthetics with travel. For Friedrich Schiller, freedom, equality, and public happiness are a telos of an aesthetic voyage. Art historian Kobena Mercer recognizes in work by black artists “passageways into further freedoms”. What do the aesthetic possibilities of our travels look like in view of the homogenizing force of the global marketplace and the resulting obstruction of movement? And how do environmental destruction, schemas of neoliberal subject formation, and enduring conditions of social inequity and racial violence bear on the aesthetics of travel in the current age? The essay traces how artistic voyages in the genres of performance opera, drawing, the novel, and film installation turn away from commodifying and consumerist schemes of aesthetic mobility to produce transformed scripts of aesthetic address and relationship and to engender necessary social and political changes.
