Abstract

This paper analyses the relationship between avant-garde art and cultural resistance during 1970’s in Brazil. In view of the Institutional Act Number 5 (AI-5), the spread of censorship, the institutionalization of repression and the social effects of “Brazilian Miracle”, the artistic production developed a critic rhetoric against the authoritarianism. Thus, this paper suggests that much of 1970’s Brazilian art reacted to the oppressive context through three modes of resistance: the “fury signifier”, the “party-form” and “counter-communication”, each one related to three basic emotions: rage, joy and irony.
