One of the central themes in the work of art historian Aby Warburg (1866-1929) was "the phenomenon of exchanges between the cultures of the South and the North." We seek to understand the significance of this historical problem in texts in which he interprets the images as a result of both the exchange between Florentine and Flemish cultures in the second half of the fifteenth century, and the influx of Italian antiquity into the Germanic world in the early sixteenth century.
