O século XVIII, no Ocidente europeu, inventou uma disciplina: a estética. A partir daí, o domínio da sensibilidade ganha autonomia teórica e pode ser objeto de um discurso não apenas normativo – artesanal ou técnico – mas filosófico. O sensível aparece como irredutível às outras ordens da razão.
