Abstract

Scientific illustration is a graphic domain that combines Science and Art disciplines in a rather broad, diverse and motivating intervention field. Being a pedagogical model and a visual communication tool, it gathers a great potential to fully communicate and disseminate Science, in a simple, expeditious and immediate way, showing that Scientific Illustration, with its accuracy and credibility, is a useful tool in the research and learning processes, both for scientific experts and to a broader public. It will be suggested terminology and concepts that allow understanding scientific illustrations as visual units, or constructs, integrated in the notion of visual literacy. Its definition, methodology and interaction with the scientific knowledge are to be here presented in response to the essential question: are these specific images also Science?
