This study evaluated the economic and financial viability of completely replacing soybean meal (SBM) with castor bean cake (DCBC) detoxified by two alkaline agents in the production of dairy goats of the Saanen and Anglo-Nubian breeds. Six production systems were simulated: Saanen goats fed a standard SBM-based diet; Anglo-Nubian goats fed a standard SBM-based diet; Saanen goats fed a standard DCBC Ca(OH)2-based diet; Anglo-Nubian goats fed a standard DCBC Ca(OH)2-based diet; Saanen goats fed a standard DCBC NaOH-based diet; Anglo-Nubian goats fed a standard diet based on DCBC NaOH-based diet. The highest feed costs were observed in the systems that used SBM-based diets. The simulation for milk and offspring production from 72 dairy goats provided revenue higher than production costs, resulting in positive economic indicators for all scenarios evaluated. Revenues generated by systems using the Saanen breed are higher, since the price of the product generated is more valued in the goat market. In addition, Saanen goats fed with DCBC generated higher net revenue due to lower feed costs. Regarding payback, all diets presented a low return time on the investment applied, with values of less than three years for Saanen and between 3.19 and 4.03 for Anglo-Nubian, with emphasis on the system that used DCBC NaOH-based diets.
Keywords: production costs; dairy goat farming; productivity; Ricinus communis.
