Estudios realizados por Armstrong et al.(1973,1974) demostraron que al
suplementar con metionina dietas elaboradas a base de sorgo con alto
porcentaje de taninos conteniendo niveles subóptimos de
proteína, se corregía la disminución en la
ganancia de peso corporal, pero se observaba una mayor incidencia de
transtornos locomotores, ese efecto no se presentaba al adicionar
metionina en las raciones formuladas con sorgos bajos entaninos, por lo
que Elkin et al. (1978a) realizaronuna serie de experimentos para
determinar la etio-logía de esas anormalidades detectadas al
incluirsorgos con una alto contenido de taninos. Al utilizar los sorgos
con mayor porcentaje de taninosse deprimió el crecimiento y
aumentó la conversión alimenticia, lo cual fue corregido
al adicionar metionina (Cuadros 15 y 16). La suplementación de
vitaminas y minerales no corrigió los trastornos locomotores, y
la mineralización del tejido óseo aparentemente no se vio
influenciada por lacantidad de taninos; se sospechó de una
posible alteración en la matriz ósea (Cuadro 17).
