Introduction: Despite advances in the treatment of hypertension, nonadherence has been identified as an important risk factor for lack of control of blood pressure and therapeutic failure. Objective: To evaluate the rates of adherence to antihypertensive treatment and control of blood pressure in hypertensive patients attended by the family health strategy in São Luís/MA. Methods:This is a cross-sectional study carried through an interview and blood pressure measurement at home. The MMSA-8 scale, translated and validated in Portuguese, was used to evaluate the treatment adhesion. Patients with a score of 8 on MMSA-8 were considered adherent. Results: A sample of 100 hypertensive patients were selected, with a mean age of 61.5 (± 11.7) years and female predominance (71%). Mean systolic and diastolic blood pressure (mmHg) were 150 and 94, respectively, and only 20% of the patients had controlled blood pressure. It was also possible to observe low rate of therapeutic adherence (18%), and high rates of physical inactivity (84%) among participants. Conclusions: This study demonstrated a low prevalence of drug adherence in the study population.
